How to Improve the World (2021) + Listening workshop
“Your earliest memory, is it a sound or an image?” asks the protagonist in Thi Trinh Nguyen’s film.
What does it truly mean to listen closely? From shamanic ear-blowing rituals of indigenous Vietnamese people, regional dialects to the sounds of miners’ labour, the two films explore the relationship between auditory experience and cultural memories.
This screening and workshop event invites the audience to explore the radical potential of listening in today's hyper-visual world and how sound can reveal forms of knowledge and histories that are otherwise elusive or in the periphery.
Screening programme:
Ear Plan by dir. Susan Atwill (10min)
How to Improve the World by dir. Thi Trinh Nguyen (47min)
Followed by a workshop led by Cường Minh Bá Phạm.
The event is presented in collaboration with ZII Gallery and will be accompanying the exhibition <Oriented by Dialect>.
