Whose Homeland 25-26

Sine Screen presents a new edition of <Whose Homeland>, a film season that brings together both fiction and non-fiction new releases, archival rediscoveries, and artist moving-image works from East and Southeast Asia and beyond. Running from November 2025 to March 2026 across London, with touring events in Bristol, Birmingham, and Manchester, this edition builds on the project’s 2023 launch to expand and complicate its scope.

The programme traces experiences of migration alongside stories of internal dislocation and marginalised lives, attending to the fractures and shifting identities that emerge in moments of political and social change. Approaching the homeland as a concept in flux and continually unsettled, this season turns to engage with belonging, alienation and histories beyond national frameworks.

The selection ranges from rarely screened works by filmmakers including Shinji Aoyama to recently re-discovered Hong Kong film Lost (1970) directed by street photographer Ho Fan and Suh Po-Ling, to hybrid events examining the precarity of migrant labour today.

With special events sited within diasporic communities—the season also anchors cinema within lived geographies of migration, where questions of homeland are continually reimagined.

Presented with the support of the BFI, awarding National Lottery funding.
